Sit upright with a straight spine, either in a comfortable chair or on the floor. Make sure your back will be comfortable ~ if sitting on the floor, support it with the wall if necessary. Breathe slowly, evenly, gently. Keep your body very still, tongue released to the floor of the mouth. Always protect yourself before opening to meditation or communion with the Spirit World. Follow directions in the Connecting with Heaven & Earth Meditation for basics of breathing and protecting yourself as you open in meditation. Make sure the candle flame is at eye height. Let your eyes be soft without straining. Stay very focused on flame, bringing your mind back over and over as it wanders away. Let the candle light remind you of the spiritual Light within your own True Self. Never force thoughts away, which empowers them. Accept and acknowledge them, letting them float through your mind, or simply do not open the door of your mind to allow entry . You may also choose to observe the thoughts that have come to “visit,” and tell them to move on by. As you watch the flame, observe the movement of it, including its aura, or the light around it. When your eyes become tired, close them, focus on the third eye (between eyes and just above them), noticing if you see a flame there, what color it is, etc. If it moves away bring it back over and over. When you can no longer bring it back, open your eyes and continue to gaze at the candle. Continue as long as it feels comfortable, and stay open to whatever comes up; allow yourself to become one with the candle flame, one with the Divine, one with all, and forget your separate self. Merge with the Great Light of the Universe. When you finish your meditation, rub your hands together rapidly to build up warmth, cup your palms and rest them gently over your eyes for a few moments. Send love, appreciation and healing energy to your precious eyes.
Note : Sit for only five (5) minutes to begin with, slowly adding to your time as you feel more comfortable. Because, in time, you will allow yourself to become one with your object of meditation, whatever it is, it should be beautiful to you and touch your soul, for it is a vehicle for your awakening. You may choose to meditate upon a beautiful flower, a peaceful scene in nature, or a picture of an evolved being such as Jesus, Mother Mary, Buddha, etc. Have no expectations, such as special powers developing, or trips to other realms. You'll get side-tracked, and your ego will take over and keep you from truly experiencing your Self, and your connection with the Divine. Stay open to each new experience and what is offered, and remember that you are slowly disciplining your mind and body to be still, calm down and, in time, allow you to touch your True Self and the Divine Light within.
You may also wish to meditate upon the following Biblical passage to remind you that you're never alone, always watched over, guided and loved: Psalm 91: 11 ~ 16 : For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him (her!); I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
